The Journal of a Tour in Russia in 1867 is the only record of Carroll's only foreign travel. With its quietly humorous observations of foreign scenes, it is, as the editor John McDermott points out, "perhaps the most entertaining portion of all the diaries and is certainly essential to any study od the Dodgson-Carroll personality. Also here are pieces from Carroll's earliest works (for the two family periodicals, The Rectory Umbrella and Misch-Masch), from his Oxford papers (including his interview, "Alice on the stage", which discusses the origins of Alice and gives his ideas and comments on the characters in the book and the play), some of his famous puzzles and brain-teasers, and selections from almost his last writings. There are 18 poems, including the first stanza "Jabberwocky" with a detailed explication of its alleged meaning, as well as the initial versions of other Carroll classics.
