The Witchery of Archery was originally published in 1877. It is a fascinating account of the adventures "by field and flood" of brothers Maurice and Will Thompson. The Thompson brothers fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and, after the war, returned to their Georgia home and picked up the weapons of thei youth... the English long bow. This book, written by Maurice Thompson, details hunting trips into areas virtually uncharted at the time; namely the Florida Everglades and Lake Okechobee. One of the trips brought the Thompson brothers face to face with a trio of Civil War deserters who had sought refuge on Lake Okechobee. Despite such adventures, archery remains foremost in this book. There are vivid descriptions of long bow shooting, from a variety of birds on the wing to the Florida panther. Any reader, not just the enthusiastic archer, will marvel at the skills shown by a Seminole Indian during a hunting trip with Maurice Thompson.
