This is a very thorough, penetrating and perceptive study of linguistic features which contribute to the "difficult" and intangibile quality of the style of Henry James's late novels. Professor Chatman uses, in a clear and non-technical manner, some of the concepts and methods evolved by modern linguistics, especially by transformational-generative grammar. At the same time he is able to throw light on some of James's more baffling literary effects - not least by an amusing treatment of contrasted parodies of the Jamesian style.
